How does carl get shot
About halfway into season six, episode nine Rick's son Carl Chandler Riggs gets shot in the eye. It doesn't happen exactly as it did in the comics, but Carl gets shot by a stray bullet from Jessie's son Ron while trying to make their way through a sea of zombies in their home of Alexandria.
The reveal stayed satisfyingly true to the comic. We see Carl slowly turn and look at his father while revealing the gash in his eye. He calls out to Rick before falling to the ground.
A lot of preparation went into making the scene a reality. You wouldn't realize it while watching the show, but after Carl falls to the ground, we aren't even seeing actor Chandler Riggs anymore. That whole scene where Rick picks up Carl, runs through the walkers, and gets into the infirmary that was all a dummy of Chandler," Nicotero explains.
The wound itself is illustrated a bit different from the comic series. In Kirkman's graphic novels, Carl appears to have half of his face blown off. The zombie hordes get in the way of his plan, and in "No Way Out" the Grimes and Anderson's have to sneak their way through the undead to safety.
Unfortunately, Ron's younger brother Sam gets too scared and ends up getting eaten alongside mother Jessie. This prompts Ron to pull his gun on Rick, but Michonne stabs him before he can fire. The dead Ron pulls the trigger on reflex and Rick turns to see Carl has been shot in the right eye, who promptly collapses.
Luckily, his injury wasn't fatal and he recovers and hides the injury with an eye patch. How he lost the eye is a slight change from The Walking Dead comic, where he was accidentally shot by Alexandria community leader Douglas instead. The Walking Dead season Rick Grimes found alive in spin-off clue. So why did Carl die and Chandler Riggs leave the role?
Judith was killed off in the comics as an infant, killed at the same time as Lori during the Governor prison arc. As such, like Carol, she survived her execution to grow into an important show character in her own right, though it took about six years for that to happen.
And then there are the Whisperers. McClincy could probably play younger, so it stands to reason that sure, the two of them could become friends. Or, maybe we could see a love story with her and Henry, acting as a Carl stand-in. The point is that The Walking Dead had a back-up plan for the show losing Carl in the form of Judith.
