Home Animals Do millipedes really have 1, legs? What is a millipede already? An insect? Some kind of spider? So what is a millipede then?

Centipedes are actually cousins of insects and spiders. Depending on the species and the age of the beast, the number of legs changes. How many legs do millipedes have in the end? The most common kind are the brown or black millipede. Millipedes are nocturnal creatures and live in damp and dark areas because they need moisture to live. This is why they prefer living in damp basements, cellars, and under mulch, leaf piles, compost, etc.

This process helps recycle nutrients back into the soil. However, they can also eat living plants and seedlings which can cause trouble in the garden. For this, you need some pest control spray to keep them at bay. In fact, they can be quite useful because they break dead plants down and can improve soil health. Just by looking at them, you should be able to tell them apart immediately.

Millipedes are rounder while centipedes are more flat and elongated. Millipedes, on the other hand, have 2 sets of legs on each segment. You can also tell them apart through their movements. Centipedes run much faster than millipedes. However, these two bugs are far more different from one another than they first appear. The legs of centipedes stick out to either side of their body, whereas millipede legs tend to point downwards.

Finally, centipedes always have an odd number of legs. The behavior of millipedes is also very different from that of centipedes. Millipedes more much more slowly, and will curl into a tight, defensive ball if disturbed. As hunters, centipedes are much faster and will dart quickly away. The number of legs on a centipede or millipede depends on the species.
